The Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization that is working to improve the cybersecurity of our global digital ecosystem by enabling near real-time, high-quality cyber threat information sharing among companies and organizations in the cybersecurity field.
Project:
The FSI Global Policy fellow will work for a period of 10 weeks during the summer of 2022.
CTA would propose having the intern work on two broad projects:
Ransomware incident response network (RIRN) – collectively, neither the government nor the cybersecurity industry has sufficient information about ransomware incidents to develop the most effective counter-measures. At the same time, information about ransomware attacks and how to defend against them is not reaching a wide enough audience. Therefore, CTA is helping to create the RIRN to address these shortfalls, as called for the in this report: https://securityandtechnology.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/IST-Ransomware-Task-Force-Report.pdf
Industry analysis – every few years, CTA conducts a review of the cybersecurity industry. We examine how the industry make-up is changing, the major business models for cybersecurity companies, and try to identify key companies. This effort requires a lot of research and we would have the intern assist CTA staff in carrying out this work.
The intern would assist the CEO, the Chief Recruitment Officer, and the Chief Analytic Office in working on these projects. Specific tasks could include:
Conducting on-line research
Attending meetings to take notes
Compiling and analyzing previous work in these areas
Drafting reports and recommendations.
Eligibility and Skills Required:
The internship is open to continuing undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants from any department may apply. Applicants must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Would like an intern who can communicate clearly, ask good questions, and think analytically. Beyond that, would look for diverse background and thinking. Although some knowledge of cybersecurity policy or exposure to the field would be a plus, would not expect the intern to have technical expertise, such as coding skills.
Language Requirement:
N/A
Location:
The internship host is located in Washington, D.C. If travel is not possible by the internship dates it may be conducted remotely.
Visa Requirements:
None.
Stipend:
FSI is committed to providing its opportunities to students regardless of financial constraints. FSI's Global Policy interns are provided with a stipend to cover travel and living expenses during the summer. These stipends do not exceed $6,400 per student. Students must submit a budget with their estimated costs along with their application. If you have additional financial constraints that you think may prevent you from participating in this program, please contact Academic Program Manager Patrick Laboon directly.
