East Asia Undergraduate Summer Language Study Grants 2021
These awards provide Stanford undergraduates with partial funding to undertake the study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or other approved language (by petition) overseas in a full-time, pre-approved, accredited language study program during the summer session.
Award Amounts & Registrations
- CEAS language study fellowships are intended to provide support for tuition, and partial living and travel costs during the study abroad program. Students are responsible for any costs that exceed the award amount.
- All undergraduate students who study abroad in non-Stanford programs should notify the Bing Overseas Studies office regarding their plans. - Students who need transfer credit for their program must contact BOSP at the time they apply to CEAS for funding
Due to the uncertainties surrounding travel in summer 2021, students are encouraged to prepare contingency plans for remote summer activities. If needed, students may submit two applications--one for in-person and one for remote.
- Immersive language study
- Applicants must be Stanford undergraduate students. Both U.S. citizens and non-citizens may apply.
- Applicants must have completed at least the first-year sequence in the target langauge before the fellowship commences.
- Preference will be given to East Asian Studies majors and minors, and to students who have taken a minimum of two East Asian Studies content courses.
- Applicants must apply to at least one of the pre-approved programs below for language study at the same time as applying for the language fellowship.
- A summer fellowship is awarded only for intensive language study.
- A summer fellowship may be used at a domestic program, an overseas program, or both.
- A summer session (domestic or overseas) qualifies as an intensive language program if—
- it is at least six weeks in duration and offers at least 120 contact hours of instruction for students at the advanced level.
- it is at least six weeks in duration and offers at least 140 contact hours for students at the beginning or intermediate level of the language.
- Note: Field trips and excursions cannot be used to fulfill contact hour requirements.

A student may meet the required number of weeks and contact hours by attending one program, attending more than one program, or supplementing hours with private tutoring, as long as the required total number of weeks and contact hours is obtained. If a student’s plan of study includes private tutoring, the FLAS coordinator must submit a syllabus for the tutoring and the instructor’s CV.

Applications will be judged on a combination of academic achievement, clarity and feasibility of goals, and relevance to future plans.
Application Instructions:
To apply, complete the online application form including:
1. Upload of Statement of Purpose. Maximum 2 pages single spaced, describing how this language study will benefit your schooling or future plans. Include a simple budget.
2. Upload Current Unofficial Transcript
3. Budget Estimate. Download and complete the CEAS Budget Estimate Template, then re-upload in with filename format "Last Name.First Name.xlsx"
4. Request a Langauge Instructor Evaluation. Fill out Section 1 of the CEAS language evaluation form and provide it to your language instructor for them to finish and return to CEAS. Completed evaluation forms should be emailed or delevered directly to CEAS by the language instructor.
