Audubon 2022 Policy Fellow - D.C.

The National Audubon Society is a dynamic, well-respected conservation advocacy organization and an emerging leader in climate advocacy. The 2022 Schneider Fellow will work side-by-side with highly- skilled policy and government relations advocates in Audubon’s Washington, DC-based Public Policy Office and Audubon’s Network and Communications divisions in New York City to develop a range of policy analysis, advocacy, and outreach skills. This fellowship will provide the opportunity to work in an exciting, fast-paced policy environment with professionals and experts in the policy, legislative, and climate fields.
In 2019, Audubon released an update to its climate report, Survival by Degrees, which found that nearly two-thirds of North America’s birds are vulnerable to extinction due to a changing climate. Audubon is undertaking a nationwide campaign to activate over 1.5 million members and supporters to take action to support durable, bipartisan solutions to climate change. At the same time, we are leveraging these grassroots relationships in Washington, DC and in statehouses around the country to work with elected officials on policy change. We are focused on mitigation strategies that include expansion of clean energy, innovative technology, and natural sequestration, as well as economy-wide solutions, and adaptive management of our resources.
The 2022 Schneider Fellow will work with Audubon’s federal policy team to drive a sustainable solution set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect birds and the places they need while building grassroots capacity to support those solutions. The fellow may also work alongside our other conservation strategies that are working to protect and adapt our coastlines, freshwater resources, forests, and grasslands that face a warming world.
The 2022 Schneider Fellow can expect to:
- Work directly with Audubon’s DC-based policy experts to support internal and external efforts to develop and advance policy and legislative solutions to address climate change. Audubon is deeply engaged with key Members of Congress on both sides of the political aisle to identify and advance several key pieces of legislation in 2022. Audubon also works closely with numerous non-governmental organizations based in Washington, DC. The Schneider Fellow will be engaged in all aspects of these policy activities from working directly on legislation to interfacing with congressional offices and other policy experts to interacting with NGO partners in the federal climate space.
- Support federal and state-based campaigns to advance solutions that address the impacts of climate change. Audubon has 23 state and regional offices working on policy, communications, and advocacy operations to support elected officials taking proactive steps on federal and state- based climate-policy outcomes. Audubon has robust Network and Campaign teams that focus on educating and activating our distributed network of one million plus members and over 400 Audubon chapters. The Schneider Fellow will work closely with state and regional offices, and the Network and Campaigns teams to understand the power of internal partnership and help effectively utilize Audubon’s assets to support federal climate action and our work in Congress.
- Assist wi th direct advocacy in the United States Congress on policy and legislative issues impacting Audubon’s climate agenda. Audubon is building productive working relationships with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to advance our key climate and conservation priorities. The Schneider Fellow will interact with members of Congress and their staff to understand the interworking of Capitol Hill and the importance of congressional relations for success of our climate agenda.

Audubon California is the largest state program, and works in four priority landscapes including the Central Valley, Coasts, the Desert, and Urban California. The consequences of climate change in California will be experienced acutely throughout our state, with increasing wildfires, worsening flood risks, rising sea levels and rising health risks from heat and pollutants. The 2022 Schneider Fellow will work side-by-side with highly-skilled conservation, policy, and science leaders to develop a range of policy analysis skills. This fellowship will provide the opportunity to work in an exciting, fast-paced environment with professionals and experts in the policy, science, and climate fields.

At the same time, we are leveraging these grassroots relationships in Washington, DC and in statehouses around the country to work with elected officials on policy change. We are focused on mitigation strategies that include expansion of clean energy, innovative technology, and natural sequestration, as well as economy-wide solutions, and adaptive management of our resources. In California, we continue to localize this national report in a state that consistently leads on conservation policy and protections. Most recently, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to conserve 30% of the state’s land, waters, and coastline by 2030, prioritize protection of our state’s biodiversity, and to expand access to the benefits of nature to all Californians.
The 2022 Schneider Fellow will work with Audubon California’s science and policy teams to drive a sustainable solution set to respond to the ripple effects of climate change across our landscapes, protect birds and the places they need while building grassroots capacity to support climate solutions. The fellow may be remote or based in our Sacramento office or the San Francisco office, depending on the preferred focus area for the fellow’s project and the status of those offices due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 Schneider Fellow can expect to focus on one of these areas:
- 30 by 30 implementation. Work with Audubon’s policy team to track and influence the California Natural Resource Agency’s development of a plan to conserve 30% of California’s lands, waters, and shoreline by 2030. Natural and working lands are a particular focus for Audubon.
- Renewable siting and land transition. Work directly with Audubon’s policy and renewable energy experts to analyze opportunities for renewables in light of changing land use as a consequence of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. The intersection of agriculture, water, and energy in the context of a changing climate will be essential for the Audubon and the state of California over the coming decades. Audubon works closely with industry leaders in agriculture and renewable energy, as well as partners from community-based organizations and state agencies. The Schneider Fellow will be engaged in all aspects of these activities from working on policy analysis, interfacing with partners and decision-makers, and assisting Audubon with framing its agenda in this space. Fellows may explore emerging issues such as the just and equitable transition of agricultural lands to other uses, reducing greenhouse gas emissions on farmlands and other working lands, and creating markets and sustainable incentives for sustainable land transitions.
- Nature-based solutions for climate resilience on the coast: Work with Audubon’s coastal and policy teams to track the implementation of the state’s Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy and efforts to improve coastal climate resilience following the passage of Senate Bill 1 in 2021. Would include outreach to and coordination with Audubon chapters along the coast and other partners. The Audubon team can work with the fellow to narrow the scope of work depending on the fellow’s interests, including policy, conservation planning, GIS, or biological monitoring and modeling.
- Expanding access to nature for nature-deprived communities: Work with Audubon’s policy team to identify and secure funding for opportunities to expand access to nature through state legislation and the state budget. Depending on the fellow’s interests, could include policy review and conservation planning, engagement with partners and coalitions, development of GIS products, and community outreach and organization.

Undergraduates and graduate students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, and applicants may vary in academic interests, public service involvement, and experience. Priority will be given to students who have completed fewer than two previous Cardinal Quarter opportunities.
Selected Fellows are expected to begin service by June 20, 2022 for a summer fellowship. All fellows are required to work with their community partners full-time for twelve consecutive weeks at their placements. Fellows may be required to work remotely depending on the forthcoming University policies. Please review the complete program policies for additional requirements. Other commitments include the following:
Quarter before fellowship
- Complete an online program orientation.
- Complete Engaging in Ethical and Effective Service workshop or worksheet.
- Attend Schneider Fellows cohort session(s)
- Design a personal learning plan and share the learning plan with site supervisor and academic mentor.
- Submit a brief preliminary report.
- Submit a final report, complete a program evaluation, and correspond with fellowship donor(s) as requested by fellowships program staff.
Quarter after fellowship
- Attend a de-briefing meeting for the purpose of reflecting upon and evaluating fellowship experiences.
- Participate in outreach activities to share the experience and help publicize the program.

This fellowship is intended for individuals whose application, references, and interview demonstrate
- an integration of the fellowship experience with applicant’s academic, personal and/or career goals
- prior demonstrated interest or involvement in the subject area, including related coursework
- a compelling match between applicant’s skills and interests and an organization’s work and needs
- strong potential for the fellowship experience to enlarge a candidate’s understanding of an identified community issue or challenge
Complete applications are screened, finalists interviewed, and fellows selected by our partner organizations with the intention to award fellowships within six weeks of the application deadline. Applicants should respond promptly (within 48 hours) via email to a fellowship offer, or the offer will be rescinded. Once an applicant accepts a fellowship offer, the student should promptly notify all other Stanford and non-Stanford programs to which they have applied that they have accepted another offer and to withdraw their candidacy.
