2023 Monica Miller Walsh Internship Grants for Self-Arranged Internships in Latin America
The Center for Latin American Studies supports students for self-arranged remote or in-person summer internships. In-person internships are contingent on university guidelines. Monica Miller Walsh Awards of up to $7,000 are available to Stanford undergraduate students interested in completing an independent internship in Latin America. First-generation college students and students with demonstrated financial need are encourage to apply.
Language Prerequisite:
Working knowledge of Spanish is required.

Be prepared to upload the following documents when completing your SOLO Application:
- Curriculum Vitae or Resume
- Statement of Purpose - In addition to describing why you would like to intern for the organization, your statement should include host organization name, website, internship address, contact person email and phone number, as well as the job content.

- Unofficial Transcript
- Faculty Letter of Recommendation

Grant Reporting Responsibilities
The grant recipient must attend an orientation meeting before traveling abroad, complete a short report (2-3 pages) midway through their experience abroad, complete a final narrative report (5-7 pages) and final financial report (1-2 pages) after returning to the United States, and participate in a public presentation regarding their internship.
Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee of faculty members affiliated with the Center for Latin American Studies.

“For undergraduate students, Stanford-sponsored or Stanford-organized trips are prohibited to countries or regions and locations within a country where International SOS risk rating (either the medical risk or travel risk) is “High” or “Extreme,” or where there is other reliable information of significant health or safety risks for either the country destination, or for the particular region or location of intended travel within the country destination, or where there is other reliable information of significant health or safety risks. To determine a location’s International SOS medical and travel risk ratings, click “Know My Risks” and select the destination country (immediately below and to the left of “Learn About Your Risks”).
No university funds or resources may be used, university sponsorship provided, or academic credit awarded, in support of travel to these locations. All individuals engaging in university-sponsored travel must comply with all applicable travel policies.”
- Preference is given to students whose minor is in Global Studies with a concentration in Latin America and to students who have previously enrolled in at least one Latin American Studies content course.
- First-generation college students and students with demonstrated financial need are strongly encouraged to apply.

For summer 2023, all undergraduate international travelers who have not been fully vaccinated or boosted and have a university-approved exemption should work with their sending program/unit and must comply with any mitigation strategies recommended by the university. The final decision to proceed with the international learning opportunities is dependent upon factors such as a continued decline in case numbers and increase in vaccinations in specific locations. Policies regarding travel (domestic or international) and international internships will be updated as University policies evolve. Travel Reservations Requirement: All interns are required to utilize Stanford Travel, a centralized booking program, when booking air fare, hotels, or rental cars for their internship experiences.

Students must be undergraduates in good standing at Stanford with well-defined internship proposals with an organization in Latin America.

Students are eligible to receive funding only if they will be enrolling as undergraduates (preferred) or co-terminal students at Stanford campus for at least one quarter after returning from abroad.

Internships duration must be at least eight weeks.

Preference will be given to proposals for internships arranged independently and directly with a foreign-based organization, rather than through a large international internship company.
- Students on LOA will not be eligible.

International students must consult with Bechtel about interning in the U.S. or traveling out of the U.S. in the summer.

To be eligible for a stipend, students must maintain health insurance for the duration of their internship.

Violations of Global Studies Internship Program policies are also violations of the Fundamental Standard and may be referred to the Office of Community Standards. The Global Studies Internship Program reserves the right to rescind funding at any given point and time should they be apprised of any policy violations as outlined above.
