Want to study Arabic this summer? Need funding for a research project? Looking to support an internship? Apply for a grant of up to $5,000 from the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies.
We invite proposals for projects relating to Islam or Muslim societies in any region of the world and historical time period. Abbasi grants can help support projects undertaken during this summer or in the next academic year.
Application Deadline: March 15, 2018
Grants can help support:
Language Study
Take intensive language courses in any relevant languages such as Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Urdu, Pashto, or Kazakh. Courses may be in the US or abroad.
Research
This might be research towards an honors or senior thesis, or part of faculty-directed independent study. Any fields of research or undergraduate majors can apply. Proposals should be submitted with a letter of support from a faculty member.
Study Abroad
An overseas study program with a focus on Muslim societies or cultures. Proposals welcomed for BOSP programs or other Stanford-recognized study abroad.
Internships
Self-arranged internships opportunities or public service projects with NGOs or government can be funded by Abbasi grants. Organizations can be based in the US or abroad. See also our summer internships in Washington DC and New York.
Who can apply?
Any continuing undergraduate or co-term students at Stanford. Students must be back at Stanford and matriculated for at least one quarter after grant-funded project is completed. A report about your experience is required after you complete your project.
Where can I go with this grant?
For any travel, you'll be required to complete a risk assessment for travel. Stanford policy restricts undergraduate students from traveling to countries that have a State Department Travel Warning. Please contact the Abbasi Associate Director if you are interested in opportunities in countries that may be listed as the State department travel warning system is in flux.
What sort of expenses are allowed?
For projects conducted outside of Stanford, grants can be used to help pay tuition costs and fees. If your project or study is off-campus, you can use grants to pay for travel, lodging and other living costs. You can also use the grant to pay for research related costs such as purchase of materials and services such as surveys, transcription, payments to human subjects, or focus group costs. The grant cannot be used to pay for equipment (cameras, AV or computer), software, or conference travel costs.
