The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) offers the opportunity to study abroad while remaining enrolled at Stanford and is considered an integral part of the Stanford curriculum. All BOSP programs offer direct Stanford credit for courses taught overseas that frequently count toward one or more majors. In addition, many BOSP courses fulfill Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing Requirements (WAYS). Regular tuition applies, and financial aid continues. BOSP operates a variety of programs, including quarter length programs, internships and other opportunities.
Paris is an international hub of political, cultural, economic, and intellectual life that has fascinated great minds for centuries. Today, the city is home to an energetic and cosmopolitan mix of people, in one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
The Paris program offers students an essential tool for understanding the underpinnings of French culture, language, politics and society. In the program students encounter French culture through classes taught primarily in French, through internships, through ongoing research in French centers of higher learning, and through many other activities, all of which make use of the rich resources of the city and its surrounding area. Winter Quarter in Paris is based on a double-track program (Humanities track and STEM track), to allow for an increasing number of students to study in Paris while fulfilling their STEM requirements.
The French language prerequisite is waived for STEM students enrolling in Stanford-approved STEM courses such as Biochemistry or Physics. In addition, these students can intern in French hospitals, or in scientific research institutes with whom the Program has partnerships.
Students may also attend classes in the Paris University system providing a unique opportunity to fully immerse and challenge themselves in a French environment. They benefit from privileged encounters with French innovators in such areas as sustainability, public policy, economics, as well as in the arts and design. And finally, on-site study is organized both at some of the city’s most famed venues, including the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay and at more intimate places of interest.
As for interacting with the local population, staying with a host family, arranged by the Program, is one of the best ways to improve one’s French, and meet people in a meaningful way. The center also offers a language partner program in which Stanford students are paired with their French peers, with whom they improve their language skills, interact academically, and often develop friendships.
