Bing Overseas Studies Program-Santiago (Spring Quarter 2024-25)

The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) offers the opportunity to study abroad while remaining enrolled at Stanford and is considered an integral part of the Stanford curriculum. All BOSP programs offer direct Stanford credit for courses taught overseas that frequently count toward one or more majors. In addition, many BOSP courses fulfill Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing Requirements (WAYS). Regular tuition applies, and financial aid continues. BOSP operates a variety of programs, including quarter length programs, internships and other opportunities.

The Santiago program offers Stanford students a unique encounter with the diverse culture of Latin America. Santiago, a home for over 7 million people, is the capital of one of the world´s most rapidly developing economies and one of the most modern and thriving cities of Latin America. While studying in Santiago, students will explore its contrasting, multifaceted neighborhoods, delve into its history, and enjoy the blooming cultural scene and outdoor activities.

The academic program includes a variety of courses in the social sciences, humanities and sciences, with a particular emphasis on urban development, and ecology and biodiversity. Many Santiago program professors hold regular appointments at Chilean universities or have served in prominent positions in local government, policy organizations, or research institutes. A Summer quarter program in Santiago provides an opportunity for study abroad for those students who cannot attend during the regular academic year. Field trips to distinct regions of the country and national parks around Santiago allow students to appreciate the geographical and cultural diversity of the country. Moreover, as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, students will meet leading Latin American authors and intellectuals in person and gain a deeper understanding of the culture of the region.

Through the homestay program in Santiago, Stanford students learn firsthand about Chilean life. Families who participate in the homestay program are representative of Chile´s diverse society and include traditional and multi-generational families, as well as single parent hosts. By sharing meals and participating in everyday activities with their host family, students gain a unique insight into Chilean life and culture. At the same time, students will practice and improve their Spanish by speaking exclusively in Spanish with their hosts. For those students who express an interest in having additional opportunities to practice their Spanish, language partnerships with local students can be arranged through the center.
