Cantor Scholars pursue research or creative projectsinspired by art at the Cantor. Two Cantor Scholars per year will receive mentorship from experts and professionals at the museum to develop original contributions to the arts at Stanford.
Stanford undergraduate students in their junior or senior years of study and those pursuing coterminal degrees are invited to apply. Students from any and all fields of study are welcome to apply– no prior formal arts background necessary.
Cantor Scholar Program Details: If chosen as a Cantor Scholar, the Cantor will provide you with the following support for your research:
A $1,400 stipend per quarter ($2800 total), for 1-2 quarters of research in the Spring and Summer
$1,500 budget for related travel over the course of your project (travel subject to Stanford University regulations)
Access to resources in the museum
Mentorship from a member of the Cantor's staff and support of a publication editor and designer
Culminating publication of research or creative projects produced through the program
Submissions that will lend themselves well to representation/reproduction in a printed publication are especially encouraged!
To Apply: Please submit your application along with the following:
One-page proposal detailing your project, including a list of object(s) from the Cantor collection
Resume or CV
The proposal should provide an overview of the scope and anticipated outcome of your project. Your project must be related to art at the Cantor. Proposed projects may be related to either art currently on display in the galleries, art currently in storage, or both of these. Please share a preliminary list of at least one or more Cantor objects (title, artist, accession number) you would like to research. Eligibility and Requirements:
You must be a current undergraduate Stanford student in your junior or senior years of study or pursuing a coterminal degree; all majors welcome to apply
Must be able to commit 6-8 hours per week for the Spring and Summer quarters to work on your research project
Availability to work 4 hours per week in-person at Cantor during Spring quarter
Hybrid work-arrangement with possibility of full-remote work during Summer quarter
