Central Asian Policy Studies Unlock
Central Asian Policy Studies Unlock
About the Central Asian Policy Studies Unlock
CAPS Unlock is an independent think tank focused on Central Asia. We produce rigorous, policy-relevant research and foster dialogue on the region’s most pressing issues. We study developments across countries through a regional lens, recognizing that Central Asia’s challenges and opportunities are deeply interconnected — what happens in one country often shapes outcomes across borders.
Founded in 2023 and based in Almaty, our work spans the entire region. Our research explores regional cooperation, climate change, foreign policy, digitalization, AI governance, and education. Alongside our analytical output, we strengthen expert networks and public conversation through initiatives such as issue-focused summer schools, book translations, podcasts, and regular expert forums.
Projects:
FSI Global Policy Internships typically run for 10 weeks in the summer. The intern will contribute to CAPS Unlock’s ongoing research and outreach activities on regional cooperation, digital development, climate change, energy, economics, trade and China affairs in Central Asia.
In addition to supporting active projects and events, the intern will have the opportunity to develop an independent research piece — such as a policy brief, analytical note, or short academic paper — on a topic aligned with CAPS Unlock’s thematic priorities and the intern’s own academic interests.
Tasks include:
- Conducting desk research and literature reviews related to CAPS Unlock’s ongoing projects and areas of focus.
-
Drafting background notes, analytical memos, and short policy briefs.
Support the organization of events, including expert roundtables, interviews, and public discussions. - Assisting with data collection and visualization (e.g., on trade, investment, or digital transformation indicators).
- Contributing to editorial and communications work, including preparing blog posts and summaries of expert discussions.
- Participating in internal meetings and contribute ideas to the development of ongoing and future research projects.
