Discretionary funding is intended for music-related extracurricular activities for students who are affiliated with the Department of Music.
Eligibility and Requirements:
Student Eligibility
Currently enrolled Stanford students who are/have been enrolled in a Department of Music course
Graduating seniors cannot apply for funds to be used for the summer after graduation
Students on Leaves of Absence are not eligible
Students who have not submitted a Grant Report Summary for a previously funded request are not eligible
Student groups (such as Voluntary Student Organizations) are eligible to apply to Department of Music discretionary funding as a supplemental funding source
Applicants may submit more than one funding request per year for different projects, but discretionary funding awards are capped at $500 per applicant, per year
Project Eligibility Limitations
Examples of funded projects include, but are not limited to:
Attending a conference
Attending a summer program
Honoraria for external guests (non-Stanford affiliates)
Funds must be used within the current academic year.
Project must be well defined, focused, and limited in scope.
Project time frame must be clearly defined with specific dates.
Projects can charge admission fees to offset specific costs of the project itself, however not for personal profit or gain.
Examples of not-funded projects include, but are not limited to:
Requests for the purchase of equipment for personal use
Request for the purchase of instruments for personal use
Application travel for undergraduates for graduate programs (unfortunately, this is not allowable)
These funds are not intended to cover capstone projects. Students and their capstone advisor should contact the DoM Undergraduate Student Services Officer to access alternate funding sources for capstone.
Application Requirements
Applications are only accepted through SOLO and require the following:
Individual student or project lead contact information
Record of previous Department of Music course enrollments
Project Proposal
Summary (50 words max.)
Detailed Information: What, where, when (timeline)?
How does the proposal fit into your academic goals?
Detailed Budget (Discretionary funding awards are capped at $500 per student, per year)
Applicants are encouraged to have their budget supported by more than one source.
If your budget exceeds the maximum funding amount of $500, you must provide information about your additional funding.
Letter of Support from a Faculty member aligned with the focus of the proposal.
Application Deadlines
Applications are due by Friday 5pm of Week 5 of each quarter.
Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Approval remains at the discretion of the funding committee.
Award Details
Requests that are funded for individuals are paid to the applicant through Student
Financial Services.
Stipends are considered reportable income per the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Resources for students with tax questions are published on the Financial Aid Office website, https://financialaid.stanford.edu/aid/tax_info/index.html.
Grant Report Summary
Grantees will be required to submit a Grant Report Summary, which will include an itemized budget report with original invoices, receipts, etc. The report is due the first week of the quarter following the project completion.
