Freie University Graduate Exchange Fellowship Campus Application 2022
The Freie University Berlin Graduate Exchange Award is designed to support Stanford graduate students who must study or conduct research in Berlin, as part of their dissertation or graduate work. For many years a graduate direct exchange agreement has existed between Stanford University and the Freie Universität Berlin.
Participants are expected to be based at the Freie University Berlin but may also do independent archival research or affiliate with other research institutes. Award can be used for numerous fields with some limitations, such as medicine. One award will be offered (per year) for study at the Freie University Berlin. Students can apply for a semester or one-academic year.
The award consists of a monthly grant (living and housing allowance for the period of ten months, from October 1 to July 31), health insurance allowance, student fees allowance, travel allowance, and a waiver of registration fees. NOTE: This award is not a full scholarship. Applicants should arrange some supplementary funding.
Campus Application Submission:
Submit application documents by February 16 at 5pm:

- Statement of Purpose: one version in German & one version in English, (maximum 1,000 words for each essay)
Prompt: Please outline your personal background, research focus, career aspirations and what motivates you to apply for this award opportunity. Be specific in describing why you need to spend an academic year or semester in Germany at the Freie Universität Berlin.

- Official Transcripts (from each post-secondary institution attended)
- Stanford Nomination Form Waiver (available at the ORC)
- One Digital Photo (professional looking headshot)
Recommenders submit letters by February 16 at 5pm
- One Letter of Recommendation from Major Advisor
- One Letter of Support from Department Chair, if other than Major Advisor.
Letters should be on letterhead with the signature and uploaded as a PDF.
A candidate for the Stanford Freie University Berlin Graduate Exchange Fellowship must meet the following criteria:
Eligibility requirements:
- Be a currently enrolled Stanford student in good standing.
- Graduate students may apply but preference is given to doctoral candidates.
- U.S. citizen or non-German citizen.
Applicants must have been in contact with the Overseas Resource Center, Bechtel International Center prior to the campus submission deadline.
