Do you know where most of your vegetables or fruit come from? You’d be surprised to know that, as of 2012, there are 7,864 locally-sourced and -grown vendors in the US—and that number continues to grow (Cho, 2012). You may also be surprised to know that conventional food vendors, perhaps from Target or ShopRite, produce 5 to 17 times more carbon dioxide emissions than local vendors. It seems reasonable that local vendors are the wave of the future.
Our New Way Garden is developing into one of the foremost vendors for food pantries and soup kitchens in Westchester County, NY. Supported by corporate contributions, various community and individual donations, and a small personal investment, we produced 20,000 pounds of organic food in 2016 and 2017, three quarters of which was donated. In order to give to those who otherwise couldn’t afford organic, healthy, and environmentally sustainable food, the remaining was sold. The produce is always of a high quality, and through selling in smaller quantities, we consistently maintain our standards. At just about 10 years old, we have been supporting the residents of the Lower Hudson Valley, bringing interest in organically-grown and locally-sourced food to our many towns.
