(1) Company Name: WAKA Fitness Ltd

Strategic Project Area: Marketing
Project location (country): Rwanda
Internship suitable for: Stanford Undergraduate and Graduate students (MBA, MSx, MA, MS, PhD)
About the company: WAKA Fitness is an emerging innovative lifestyle and fitness brand that is expanding to 12 new facilities in three new countries within the next five years. WAKA Fitness consists of WAKA Life, WAKA Retail, and WAKA Entertainment, and they hope to become the first lifestyle and fitness brand and franchise in sub-Saharan Africa.
About the company leadership: The company is currently led by its original cofounders, Dennis Dybdal and Jeannetta Craigwell-Graham. There are three additional managers and a total staff of 30 people working in WAKA Life, WAKA Retail, and WAKA Entertainment. The company puts an emphasis on being effective and creative, and it applauds action, people taking ownership and leadership, risk taking and trying new things. Additionally, Dennis runs his business very openly and shares his financials with the whole team so they understand the relationship between their work ethic and the business’s performance.
Project Description: WAKA Fitness is looking to take on an intern who can help the company develop its expansion plan in sub-Saharan Africa. This plan will be accomplished with the right marketing strategy and effective action plan through WAKA Entertainment and WAKA Life. The intern would assist in developing a five-year strategy and realistic specific actions for the next one to two years. Additionally, the intern would evaluate costs, staff, and resources required for this plan and determine the expected financial impact.
(2) Company Name: AC Group Ltd
Website: www.acgroup.rw
Strategic Project Area: Marketing
Project location (country): Rwanda
Project requirements: Computer science background
Internship suitable for: Stanford Undergraduate and Graduate students (MBA, MSx, MA, MS, PhD)
About the company: AC Group’s main product, the Tap&Go, is an automated fare collection system. It currently helps bus companies collect their revenues. Together with the Rwandan government, which uses the collected data to make real-time decisions, AC Group wants to make Kigali the first city to go cashless with public transport. AC Group is the only large-scale provider of an automated fare collection system in the region and is currently looking at providing a comprehensive smart transport solution. Ultimately, they want to replicate their system across the continent.
About the company leadership: AC Group consists of a young team with a lot of ambition to change the continent. The professional management team has achieved a lot within the innovation space and developed various new products in a very short amount of time. They have also built a lot of confidence with the Rwandan government, which now passes on projects to AC Group.
Project Description: AC Group is looking for an intern who could join the company’s Internet Bus project. In the public transport sector in Kigali, approximately 250,000 commuters per day spend an average of 45 minutes in buses. Therefore, providing Internet service in public buses would benefit commuters in terms of business continuity, improved service delivery, entertainment, and staying connected. AC Group seeks to become the main Internet service provider in buses. The intern would study the target market of the Internet service on buses and help create an exceptional Internet experience for clients that keeps them using the product.
