The Speech and Cognitive Development (SPOG) Lab, housed in the Stanford Department of Linguistics, is recruiting undergraduate research assistants, starting for Fall quarter 2025!
We are broadly interested in how infants and children acquire language, including multilingual children and children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. To understand this, we employ a variety of techniques including machine learning and automatic speech recognition technology algorithms to model children’s language development. We combine these measures with more traditional in-lab psycholinguistic experiments like eye-tracking and neuro-imaging with children aged 0-6.
There are a lot of different ways to get involved (e.g. developing natural language processing algorithms, creating public outreach materials for audiology clinics, managing social media, working directly, hands-on with children and their families), and there will be options to work both in person and virtually. Previous undergraduate students in our lab have gone on to graduate programs in linguistics, computer science, and cognitive science and have co-authored conference presentations and papers.
There will be the possibility to apply for credit or pay (after committing a minimum of 1 quarter of work to the lab).
If you have any questions about the application, please contact us at spoglab.stanford@gmail.com. We look forward to reading your application!
Eligibility and Requirements:
We ask that you commit to a minimum of 10 hours of work/week and at least 2 consecutive quarters.
To apply, please fill out this application form to the best of your ability.
