The Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU) provides Stanford doctoral students with a home base to advance their dissertation research in China. Located on the Peking University campus in an area known for its rich intellectual community, the Center facilitates academic discovery and rich collaborations to support cutting-edge graduate research. The Center provides workspaces, Stanford amenities, internet access and bi-lingual staff.
Limited grants are available to support research while at SCPKU. Doctoral students who already have funding from other sources can apply for SCPKU office space; those needing funding can also apply for a limited number of fellowships to support research activities and SCPKU office space. The program is open to doctoral students in all fields, disciplines, and schools. Aside from promoting cutting edge research, a key goal of the program is to enrich Stanford students’ networks by increasing opportunities that will lead to new, long-term research programs and collaborations in China, regardless of field of specialization. Awardees are expected to spend the bulk of their fellowship period in Beijing and maximize their time at SCPKU.
There are two types of awards that doctoral students can apply for: 1) Grant Plus Office Space, and 2) Grant of Office Space Only. Both are geared toward students who will be based primarily at SCPKU.
Grant Plus Office Space
Applications for round-trip economy airfare to Beijing and Beijing-based living expenses for up to three months will be considered. Included as part of the award are the cost of SCPKU office space and related services, including internet access
Applicants can apply for office space at SCPKU beyond the three months for up to one year, but no additional funding is available.
Grant of Office Space Only
Applications for only office space will be considered for stays of any length of time up to one year. These awards will pay for the cost of SCPKU office space and related services, including internet access.
Doctoral students who already have funding can apply for "Grant of SCPKU Office Space Only" awards at any time by completing an application online here. Doctoral students without funding from other sources may complete and submit a "Grant Plus Office Space" application online here. Applicants will be notified when their applications have been received and award decisions will follow pending a review by the SCPKU Faculty Advisory Committee per the schedule below. Application materials will not be returned.
Fellowship proposals should clearly and succinctly specify the research objectives, including the research question, significance of the research topic, the methodology used, and why time at SCPKU is needed. The applicant's official transcript is also required as part of the application package. Finally, the applicant's dissertation chair must submit a letter of support to the selection committee. Both supporting documents must be submitted by the application deadline; submittal instructions are provided in the online application form.
As part of the application process, doctoral students should indicate their desired length of stay (up to one year maximum) at SCPKU as well as a prioritized set of calendar windows they are applying for to ensure proper space allocation. To best accommodate preferred calendar windows and optimize SCPKU space utilization, SCPKU encourages applicants to submit proposals to the earliest possible application review cycle. Awards will be processed and distributed via Stanford's Graduate Financial Support (GFS) system; in addition, students will receive information about travel, housing, and other logistics. SCPKU staff can provide guidance but students are responsible for actual arrangements.
