The STEM Peer Learning Program connects students (STEMentees) in select introductory science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classes with personalized mentorship and course-specific academic, social, and wellness support from trained, near-peer undergraduate mentors (STEMentors). While open to all students, the program is especially designed to support students that could benefit from near-peer mentorship and enhanced academic support.
In collaboration with academic departments and VPUE’s Leveling the Learning Landscape Initiative, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is piloting the STEM Peer Learning Support program. This program expands upon a successful near-peer mentoring program in Stanford’s Chemistry department, called STEMentors. Undergraduate mentors in this program will support their peers in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, building general and discipline-specific academic, social, and wellness skills, and help foster a sense of community.
Under the general supervision of the Student Learning Specialist (SLS) in CTL, STEMentors will support students enrolled in select STEM courses (referred to as the parent course) individually through optional 1:1 meetings and in small groups (Mentor Sections). STEMentors will host weekly mentor sections, attend weekly content meetings with faculty and the SLS, and participate in a 10-session mentor training program facilitated by the SLS.
