Overview
HAI and the EST Hub are offering 9-10 week full-time (35 hours per week) summer fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students from June 19 - August 25. Students will be placed at host organizations focusing on responsible technology and policy. This fellowship has two tracks with the possible placements:
Track 1: Tech Ethics and Policy in DC (Graduate Students)
Possible placements: U.S. Congress, Executive Branch, and federal agencies, Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Federation of American Scientists, Special Competitive Studies Project, Brookings Institution.
Track 2: Tech Ethics and Policy in California (Undergraduate Students) - TRACK 2 APPLICATIONS CLOSED FOR 2023
Possible placements: Apple, Cloud Flare, Mozilla, DeepMind, Anthropic, Graphika, Access Now, Tech Matters, StreetCode Academy, Wikimedia, Connect Humanity, Human Rights Data Analysis Group, Center for Humane Technology
All selected fellows must enroll in a spring course (soon to be announced) that will focus on responsible tech and communication skills to prepare them for their summer fellowships. Throughout the program, students will learn directly from Rob Reich and Marietje Schaake as well as an array of affiliated fellows/mentors with extensive experience in the tech industry, civil society, and government.

Graduate students
those who have completed at least one computer science or symbolic systems course (with a preference for multiple courses), or multiple courses in the School of Engineering

Early applications:
Due on Sunday December 18 at 11:59pm PT. Students who apply in this round will receive priority placement to your organization/agency/office. Interviews for finalists will take place the week of January 9 for early applicants.
Regular applications:
Due on Sunday January 15 at 11:59pm PT. Interviews for finalists will take place the week of January 16 for regular applicants. Note: Applications for Track 2 are closed for 2023. All spots were filled in the early application round.
In the event that the fellowship spots for a track are filled after the early application deadline, applications will no longer be accepted for that track. If this is the case, we will update the SOLO, HAI, and EST Hub websites to reflect this change. It is strongly encouraged that students apply early.
