The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) offers the opportunity to study abroad while remaining enrolled at Stanford and is considered an integral part of the Stanford curriculum. All BOSP programs offer direct Stanford credit for courses taught overseas that frequently count toward one or more majors. In addition, many BOSP courses fulfill Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing Requirements (WAYS). Regular tuition applies, and financial aid continues. BOSP operates a variety of programs, including quarter length programs, internships and other opportunities.
The city of Oxford has a population of about 150,000 and sits at the meeting place of the Thames and Cherwell Rivers, 51 miles northwest of London. The 38 colleges and halls that form the core element of Oxford University dominate the beautiful and historic city center. Founded in 1231, Oxford is the third-oldest university in Europe and the oldest English-language university in the world. The student body is made up of 22,600 men and women from 140 countries, half of whom are undergraduates. International students are most present in the graduate student community; about one in ten undergraduates is from outside of the United Kingdom, whereas for graduates the figure is seven in ten.
The tutorial system is the unique form of undergraduate instruction at Oxford University and the backbone of the academic program at the Montag Centre for Overseas Studies in Oxford. Tutorials allow students to explore a topic of their choosing in great depth under the guidance of a member of the Oxford academic community, a tutor, who is a specialist in the field. All students are required to take one six- or seven-unit tutorial each quarter while they are at Oxford, along with one or more lecture courses taught by Oxford academics or visiting Stanford faculty.
In addition to the academic experience, Stanford students are included in the daily life of Oxford in several ways. Associate memberships with three Oxford colleges provide the primary port of entry to university society and opportunities to interact with British and overseas students. There, meals, recreation in the JCRs (student unions) as well as sporting and musical societies are open to Stanford students. University wide clubs and societies, such as drama or photography, along with local charities and places of worship are open to students throughout term. Students live in double or single rooms at Stanford House, located in a collection of recently renovated historic buildings in the heart of the city. Most activities in Oxford are within walking distance of Stanford House. Those seeking cultural activity will find major museums, live theater, cinema, classical-music concerts and touring opera performances within Oxford, and London is only an hour and a half away by bus.
