Bill Lane Center for the American West Internships

Working with Heyday’s editorial team, the intern will become an integral part of a bustling small publishing house with a focus on California and the American West.

The intern will work directly with the Yellowstone archaeologists in developed areas and back county off trail settings, gaining a variety of fieldwork experiences, including survey, excavation, and site condition assessments.

Help American Rivers’ California Central Valley team restore and revitalize urban streams while increasing climate resiliency and nature access for historically-marginalized communities in the greater Sacramento region.

Dive into hands-on ecosystem science with the San Francisco Estuary Institute’s Resilient Landscapes Program internship where you’ll join a dynamic team of scientists, sharpen your GIS, research, and data analysis skills, and help shape innovative strategies for Bay Area landscapes. 

Gain hands-on experience in biodiversity and carbon finance! This internship offers a unique opportunity to explore emerging market trends, analyze global policies, and connect with industry experts to support Blue Forest’s strategic growth in conservation finance.

Come spend the summer at CalTrout’s Mount Shasta office, where you will work and learn about and help restore and protect habitat for wild fish in some of the most beautiful places in the headwaters of far northern California!

This summer’s internship will support land trust staff in assessing climate vulnerability on conserved lands. Additionally, the intern will assist with stakeholder outreach in a stronghold watershed supporting Deschutes River steelhead.

 Support our conservation and stewardship teams in assessing climate vulnerability at land trust properties & mitigation strategies to reduce anticipated impacts. In addition, have the opportunity to assist with community engagement to learn about all facets of the land trust’s work.

Interested in water resources and wildfires? Part of a larger effort exploring how wildfires impact water in the West, this will provide hands-on experience in quantifying the impact of wildfires on critical water resources and use this information to inform proactive wildfire mitigation.

Expand and elevate the media arts elements of NHI’s outreach and program efforts using digital photo, video, website, and social media. Revamp a digital image repository and capture footage and images relevant to NHI’s initiatives.

Dive into elections and redistricting, learn the value of non-partisanship in communicating with people all across the political spectrum, meet state legislators and other experts, and help plan events that bring together Democrats and Republicans on today’s hottest topics!

Work with a nonprofit watershed conservation org on a federally-funded project that will optimize data collection, data availability, and streamflow forecasting to enhance fisheries in partnership with numerous agency, private, and nongovernmental partners throughout Idaho and Wyoming.

Help American Rivers restore and protect the San Joaquin River and the largest, last remaining native grasslands in California’s Central Valley by assisting with restoration and monitoring work at Great Valley Grasslands State Park.

Survey insects in under-sampled regions of the American West! Research will help identify the ecological functions of insects in these grasslands and sage brush systems, and provide management recommendations for large scale efforts by federal agencies to control grasshopper populations.

The Lewistown Public Library is proud to offer enriching programs and thoughtful collections to our community. We would love to welcome an intern to help us preserve our archives and develop educational programming for all ages. 

Work on a team of research ecologists to enhance the conservation and management of black-tailed prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets! Have an immersive experience in a remote setting surrounded by intact grassland ecosystem, abundant wildlife, and beautiful prairie landscapes.

Work on a federally-funded project that will provide stakeholders and managers with the data, models, and strategies needed to more precisely manage the watershed's irrigation system to meet the needs of irrigators while also improving hydroelectric power generation and streamflow for fish.

Assist interpretive ranger staff at busy visitor center front desk while roving the trails, scenic viewpoints and trails, providing information to visitors, helping with projects, researching, developing and presenting relevant interpretive walks and talks!
